Sumatinath was born at Ayodhya in the Ikshvaku clan. His father's name was King Megharath and Mother Queen Sumangla or Mangala Rani Lord SumatinathHis birth date was the eighth day of the Baisak shukla. It is said that the soul of Purushasimha who due to vigorous penance and higher spiritual practices, earned the Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra-karma descended into the womb of queen Mangalavati or Sumangala, wife of king Megh of Ayodhya.King Megharath named the new born as-Sumati (wisdom or right thinking).

Sumatinath in due course inherited the kingdom. King Megharath became an ascetic. After a long and peaceful reign Sumatinath, too, became an ascetic. He attained omniscience under a Priyangu tree on the eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra. He established the four pronged religious ford and became a Tirthankar.
